The Tippecanoe Valley Football Program will hold a free-will-donation pancake breakfast fundraiser on April 22, 2017 at the Mentone Fire Station from 7 to 11 a.m.
Money raised from the pancake breakfast supports Tippecanoe Valley football youth and high school programs.
The breakfast is also an opportunity to meet varsity players and coaches. Attendees can also learn more about the Tippecanoe Valley Youth Football and Cheer Program for ages 7 to 12.
The Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce held its 4th Annual GPS 2 Success Career Expo on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capitol Center.

Over 50 businesses, colleges, and organizations participated in the event in order to showcase career opportunities to high school students from Warsaw, Wawasee, Whitko, Tippecanoe Valley, Lakeland Christian Academy, and Fairfield.
During the event, students had the opportunity to participate in an Instagram challenge for the chance to win an iPad Mini and other smaller prizes. The winner of the iPad Mini was Kourtney Combs who is a senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation (TVSC) is accepting applications from non-resident transfer students for the upcoming school year.
A non-resident transfer student is one whose legal settlement is not within the boundaries of the school corporation and would like to attend any TVSC school – Akron Elementary School, Mentone Elementary School, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, or Tippecanoe Valley High School – during the 2017-2018 school year.
This includes full-day kindergarten classes at Akron Elementary School and Mentone Elementary School and the alternative education program at the Burket Educational Center. The cost of transfer tuition is waived for all approved non-resident transfer students.
A non-resident transfer student application can be found on the school corporation’s website at www.tippecanoevalleyschools.com. Click on “Easy Enrollment” in the middle of the page and then click on “Non-Resident Application”.
Applications can also be picked up at the office of any Tippecanoe Valley school or from the Tippecanoe Valley administration office. Applications must be turning in at the administration office.

The Tippecanoe Valley High School student council will host its final blood drive of the current school year on Tuesday, April 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.
The student council hosts four blood drives throughout each school year. The American Red Cross provides scholarship money to students depending on the number of blood donations collected at the blood drive.
Student Council Advisor Crystal Heckaman says the number of donations needed to receive scholarship money might come up short this year because seniors leaving for their senior trip that same evening have been asked not to donate.
“This will cause a significant shortage in the number of donors that we have available and could prevent us from reaching our scholarship fund goal,” said Heckaman.
The blood drive is open to anyone who meets the donor requirements outlined by the American Red Cross. Community members can also donate blood as long as they register before the event. People can register by calling Heckaman at (574) 598-2129 or email [email protected].
“We strongly encourage donors from the community to join us for the blood drive,” she added.
The most recent blood drive hosted by the high school student council on Feb. 3 collected 54 units of blood for the American Red Cross.
According to the American Red Cross, a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
The Tippecanoe Valley Athletic Department will offer sports physicals for the upcoming school year on Wednesday, May 3rd at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School starting at 7:00 pm.
Physicals are available for all athletes that will be in grades 5-12 next year. All athletes are required to have a physical on file before participating in any sport.
Indiana High School Athletic Association regulations state that for a physical to be valid for the next school year, it must be completed after April 1st .
Physical forms can be picked up at all Tippecanoe Valley schools and they must be signed by the parents and the students.
The cost for the physical is $15. Checks should be payable to “Tippecanoe Valley Middle School”.
A Tippecanoe Valley High School senior will continue his academic and baseball career at Danville Area Community College in Illinois.
Alec Craig was TRC All-Conference in baseball the past two years. He plans to major in business.

A 1976 graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Indianapolis on March 22.
Ron Newlin received the Indiana Pacers 2017 Silver Medal Award for serving as executive director of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame from 1987 to 1995. The award is given each year to a person who has made some contribution to the game other than as a coach or player.
Armed with four years’ experience developing exhibits at the Indiana State Museum, Newlin, at age 28, became heavily involved in the process to relocate, design, build and open the new Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame museum in New Castle.
Part of his role was to oversee a $1.7 million statewide capital campaign to help fund construction of the museum, as well as grow the organization’s membership and donor base. Newlin was also instrumental in launching the Indiana Basketball History quarterly magazine.
Newlin and his family moved to Indiana his sophomore year. He found success in baseball and cross country, but ironically, didn’t make the cut when he tried out for the basketball team.
“High school sports, for me, weren’t about exceling. They were about learning self-confidence and redefining myself as something other than a nerd,” he joked.
Although he wasn’t on the court, Newlin got to tag along with the basketball team as a manager and statistician. He recalls Akron winning the 1974 sectional his first real exposure to the excitement of a state tournament, a story he would often share as museum director.
“I tell it because everybody who played basketball in Indiana has a story like that,” said Newlin. “That’s what the Hall of Fame tries to do is give everybody who loves basketball a place to find something meaningful to them.”
Newlin and the 13 other inductees will be part of a main display at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame over the next year. Inductees can be nominated by anyone year round, but have to be out of high school for at least 25 years.

A team of Tippecanoe Valley High School students once again ate their way to the top spot in Penguin Point’s 38th Annual Big Wally Eating Contest.
The contest was held March 21 at the Penguin Point restaurant on Detroit Street in Warsaw. A team of three TVHS students competed, eating a total of 19 Big Wally sandwiches. Junior Michael Paseka ate eight sandwiches, senior Jerrid Edmonson ate six and senior Noah Prater ate five.
The team of three that eats the most sandwiches in 15 minutes wins. Three area high schools participated this year. This is the third consecutive win for Tippecanoe Valley and the fourth win within the past five years.
“We let upperclassmen try out for the team. The last few years, our cafeteria staff has made cheeseburgers that we use for the tryouts. The contestants get to eat a certain number of cheeseburgers on the cafeteria stage during the lunches and the fastest three make the team,” said TVHS instructor Darren Parker.
Only three of the four schools that were supposed to participate showed up this year. With the extra spot open, high school students in the crowd were asked to form a team at the last minute. Two girls from TVHS stepped up to participate.
“They held their own even though they had just both eaten supper,” said Parker. The winning team received a $400 check donated to its school’s prom fund.
