See Each Other week brings TVMS students out of their comfort zone

Tippecanoe Valley Middle School recently held a weeklong series of activities aimed at supporting student leadership, anti-bullying, and a positive school climate.

During the week of Feb. 6 – 10, students participated in “See Each Other” week, a time dedicated to getting students to start noticing and respecting their peers.

At the beginning of the week, Principal Scott Backus met with each homeroom to discuss with students the importance of treating people with respect and how to earn it in return.

“We wanted to bring to light the idea that we can be compassionate, inclusive, and care about one another.  If we can do these things, so many of the negative issues that kids face today would be reduced,” said Backus.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, students watched videos about how to “See Each Other” by showing compassion and empathy. A short writing piece and discussion followed.

“Watching the students step out of their comfort zone and interact with others that they normally wouldn’t was a nice experience,” said Candace Shepard, TVMS librarian.

Students were also challenged to become more interactive at lunch. On Thursday, students were randomly assigned to tables. At each table were peer facilitators from the high school to initiate conversation. Peer facilitators are high school students who mentor, work to resolve conflicts, and tutor other students.

“I found it interesting to hear new things about people I don’t usually talk to. I even found out new things that I didn’t know about my friends,” said Jada Hicks, an eighth grade student at TVMS.

Teachers and para-professionals also sat at the tables and interacted with the students. The cooks modified the lunch procedure to get the food out quicker, while the office staff and custodians jumped in to help by cleaning tables and picking up trays.

“It was truly an amazing thing to see the entire staff come together and support this activity,” said Backus.

While some students were in the lunchroom, others watched messages from the Kid President, a teenager from Tennessee who stars in his own YouTube videos that promote positivity, inspiration, and unity. The students also viewed three short videos about caring for others.

“They held discussions about the videos and hopefully took away some important ideas about how they, too, can care for others,” said Backus.

TVMS finished the week with a school-wide presentation by author and youth motivational speaker Tom Thelen. His presentation focused on student leadership and bullying prevention.

On Friday, Feb. 3., students, Tippecanoe Valley staff, and school board members all joined together at the Burket Educational Center for its ninth annual chili cook-off.

The cook-off took place in the school cafeteria and featured six recipes from TVSC staff members Sara Elder, Angela Woodward, Jen Kimble, Valerie Lukens, Dan James, and Jon Ekhoff.

Everyone who attended the event were given three tickets to use to vote on the chili recipes. Angela Woodward came in third place with 16 votes, Valerie Lukens came in second place with 19 votes, and Sara Elder came in first place with 22 votes. Sara’s name will be added to a plaque that features the previous winners.

Also, a panel of three guest judges selected their favorite chili in a separate judging event. These judges were TVHS Head Football Coach Stephen Moriarty and newly-elected school board members Aaron Zolman and Adam Heckaman. They chose Valerie Lukens’ chili.

TVHS blood drive nets 54 units for American Red Cross

This entry was posted in News, TV High School on by .

A blood drive hosted by the Tippecanoe Valley High School Student Council on Friday, Feb. 3, collected 54 units of blood for the American Red Cross.

A total of 74 donors showed up to donate, but 20 were deferred for various reasons, mostly low iron or illness.

In all, 54 units of blood were collected; the same amount collected at the Dec. 2 blood drive. This was the third of four blood drives the high school student council hosts throughout the school year.

The American Red Cross provides scholarship money to students depending on the number of blood donations collected at the blood drives.

The student council needs more than 200 units of blood for the year to reach the top scholarship goal of $2,500. Student Council Advisor Crystal Heckaman said 152 units have been collected so far this year.

The final blood drive for the current school year will take place sometime in April, but a definite date has not yet been set.

The blood drives are also open to community members who meet the donor requirements outlined by the American Red Cross.

Valley students hope to comfort children using handmade blankets

This entry was posted in News, TV High School on by .

Three students at Tippecanoe Valley High School are giving back to children receiving treatment in hospitals by hand making blankets to comfort them during their stay.

Juniors Olivia Trippiedi, McKenzie Murphy, and Susan Nickerson came up with the idea as part of a project for their student leadership group Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy (KYLA).

The three teenagers have been raising funds through donations, and have even incorporated their mission into Student Resource Time (SRT) at the high school. SRT is time set aside every Thursday for students to get caught up on homework, or to explore different enrichment activities such as music appreciation, cooking, painting, and many other subjects.

In this, the second year of SRT clubs, students are creating clubs based on their passions. Trippiedi, Murphy, and Nickerson asked to create an enrichment club based on their KYLA project. After raising money to purchase the materials, they secured a sponsoring teacher and recruited students to help them during SRT.

“Seeing everyone involved, it just means a lot.  McKenzie, Susan, and I, we all have a passion for kids, so we came up with the idea of doing something for a children’s hospital,” said Trippiedi.

Trippiedi said one person making a blanket takes about an hour and costs about $10 in materials. In groups of three, that time can be cut to less than 40 minutes. There isn’t really a production goal; they just want to make as many blankets as they can with the amount of donations they collect.

“We all have a passion for kids and for nursing,” said Murphy. “A lot of times kids in the hospital get stuffed animals, but blankets are something you can’t really grow out of. It’s just something to comfort them and something for them to hold on to,” she said.

Each blanket has a tag specially designed by the three teens that gets sown onto the blanket. They plan on hand delivering the blankets to Riley Hospital for Children and other pediatric hospitals later this semester.

“I would like the kids to know that there are people out there who care for them. If they’re in a bad place, there is someone who loves them. This is just a simple reminder that they’re covered by love,” said Nickerson.

If there are donations left over, but no more time to make the blankets, the money will be given directly to the hospitals. Anyone interested in making a donation to help purchase materials can contact high school math instructor Alissa Trippiedi at (574) 598-2100 or email [email protected].

TVHS to host freshman orientation event Feb. 13

This entry was posted in News, TV High School, TV Middle School on by .

Tippecanoe Valley High School is holding a freshman orientation event for current eighth grade students to help answer questions about the transition from middle school to high school.

Freshman orientation will take place on Feb. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the main gym at the high school. There is a snow makeup day of Feb. 23 in case there is inclement weather.

“The goal of freshman orientation is to get students thinking about graduation and what classes they need to take to get there,” said Sarah Tillman, guidance counselor at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

Students who attend will learn about the scheduling process and which classes they should begin to take, depending on which diploma they plan to pursue. Tillman said students will turn in their scheduling forms on the night of orientation. The scheduling form is the list of classes a student wants to take their freshman year.

Students can also speak to different departments and extracurricular groups to learn more information about their options in high school.

A representative from the Warsaw Area Career Center will also be on hand to talk about course opportunities students will have in their junior and senior years. The representative will touch on careers those courses can lead to after a student graduates.

Tillman said attending freshman orientation is not required, but it is strongly recommended. If a student does not attend, he or she must still turn in a scheduling form.

Mentone Elementary collecting coins for Riley

This entry was posted in Mentone, News on by .

Mentone Elementary School Student Council is sponsoring a coin drive to raise money for the Kosciusko County Riley Kids Fund and Riley Hospital for Children.

This year’s goal is to raise $1,000 by filling a large jug with money, primarily pennies and other coins.

“We chose to focus on pennies because we felt like e very student would be able to participate in this,” said Rebecca Hartzler, school treasurer and student council co-advisor.

Half of the money raised will go to the Kosciusko County Riley Kids Fund to help the families of children that receive treatment at Riley Hospital for Children with expenses such as gas, food, and lodging.

The other half of the money will go directly to Riley Hospital for Children. The school will accept donations the week of Feb. 13 – 17. Checks will also be accepted and should be made out to Mentone Elementary School.

“This drive is important for us because we have had some students here benefit from the services Riley offers. We just want to make sure every child who needs medical care receives it,” said Hartzler.

The collection jar will be inside the main office at Mentone Elementary School, located at 301 E. Jackson Street. Anyone in the community interested in making a donation can stop by the office Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The student council will then present a check during WRSW Riley Radio Days in March for the total amount students collected.
