VALLEY INSIGHT: Maintaining Quality School Facilities – A Continual Process at Tippecanoe Valley

This entry was posted in News on by .

Written By: TVSC Superintendent Brett Boggs

In the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation, providing attractive, efficient, and modern school facilities is a priority.  Our community expects – and our students, staff, and parents – deserve educational facilities that are safe and designed to meet the educational needs of twenty-first century learners.

Tippecanoe Valley serves almost 2,000 children in preschool through twelfth grade in our elementary schools in Akron and Mentone, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, Tippecanoe Valley High School, and the Burket Educational Center.  In addition we have several auxiliary facilities such as the bus garage, administration office, wastewater treatment plant, and wind turbine.  Providing quality school facilities is vital to fulfilling our commitment to student success today, tomorrow, and beyond.

The challenge is in how to provide such facilities while maintaining a reasonable and consistent tax rate.  This has been accomplished at Tippecanoe Valley by looking forward and prioritizing our facility needs.  When the debt for a facility is paid off, we have already planned to move into a new commitment that will keep the tax rate at a consistent and reasonable level.

The best way to illustrate this concept is with a brief history of the major construction projects that have taken place in the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation since Tippecanoe Valley High School opened in January 1975.

  • A new junior high school was constructed at Akron in 1987. At the same time, six new classrooms, restrooms, and dressing rooms were added at Mentone.  A new multipurpose room/library/cafeteria was added at Burket.
  • In 1989-90 a new administrative office complex, new boiler rooms and boilers were added at Mentone.
  • In 1993 a new auxiliary gym, classrooms, and locker rooms were added at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
  • The new Tippecanoe Valley Middle School was opened for the 1995-96 school year.
  • A new bus garage was built and opened in 1998.
  • Mentone Elementary School underwent a major renovation of existing areas and over 62,000 square feet of new construction for the 1999-2000 school year.
  • A major renovation and construction project took place at Tippecanoe Valley High School during the 2005-2006 school year. Ten new classrooms, new office spaces, a new receiving area, restrooms, and a weight room were added.  There were extensive renovations to the existing building and systems.
  • A new wastewater treatment plant that serves the middle school and high school was built in 2006-2007.
  • In 2007 a new multi-purpose facility – concession area, ticket booth, and restrooms – was constructed at the main entrance to the TVHS Football Field and Track.
  • In 2009 a Guaranteed Energy Savings Project was completed at the Burket Educational Center. This included a new geothermal heating and cooling system, renovation of restroom areas, a new roof, and new energy efficient doors and windows.
  • A 900 kWh wind turbine was built on the TVMS/TVHS campus in 2011.
  • December 2017 is the anticipated completion date of the current renovation and construction project at Akron Elementary School.

The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation is blessed with excellent educational facilities, thanks to our taxpayers and leaders who have continually looked ahead in determining our facility needs.  History shows that in a district the size of Tippecanoe Valley multiple facility needs must be addressed each decade so our school facilities continue to serve the growing and changing needs of our students, staff, and the community.

Valley Insight is a recurring monthly article written by administrators on a variety of topics related to education and the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation. Articles will be posted to the district’s website and also shared with the local media.

TVHS to host community blood drive April 18

This entry was posted in News, TV High School on by .

The Tippecanoe Valley High School student council will host its final blood drive of the current school year on Tuesday, April 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

The student council hosts four blood drives throughout each school year. The American Red Cross provides scholarship money to students depending on the number of blood donations collected at the blood drive.

Student Council Advisor Crystal Heckaman says the number of donations needed to receive scholarship money might come up short this year because seniors leaving for their senior trip that same evening have been asked not to donate.

“This will cause a significant shortage in the number of donors that we have available and could prevent us from reaching our scholarship fund goal,” said Heckaman.

The blood drive is open to anyone who meets the donor requirements outlined by the American Red Cross. Community members can also donate blood as long as they register before the event. People can register by calling Heckaman at (574) 598-2129 or email [email protected].

“We strongly encourage donors from the community to join us for the blood drive,” she added.

The most recent blood drive hosted by the high school student council on Feb. 3 collected 54 units of blood for the American Red Cross.

According to the American Red Cross, a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Akron Elementary collects $2,589 for Riley Children’s Foundation

This entry was posted in Akron, News on by .

Students at Akron Elementary had a successful campaign for two weeks in March to raise money for the Riley Children’s Foundation.

“Our goal was to collect $2,000, which we exceeded by $589.55,” said Ryan Adams, Akron Elementary student council advisor.

Beginning March 13 through March 24, students took part in several activities to raise money. The school held special days in which staff and students could donate money to wear hats or sunglasses, or use electronic devices for a certain amount of time in class.

A large portion of the fundraising total came from a penny drive. Students brought in money to vote on the teacher they wanted to see get hit in the face with a pie at the end of the campaign. Pennies were counted as one vote, but other coins and bills took votes away to make it more competitive.

Students threw pies in the faces of teachers and the principal during a convocation on March 29. The whole school also got to celebrate with a pajama day and a movie for meeting the fundraising goal.

Elementary school students throughout the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation are gearing up for their annual spring music programs.

Akron Elementary’s spring program is planned for Monday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30.

The Akron program will feature first, third and fifth grade students singing songs, dancing and playing instruments. The theme this year is “Here We Grow,” which relates to spring growth, the new school construction and students’ personal growth in school.

Limited parking is available because of the new school construction. Shuttle service will be provided for people willing to park at the Akron Community Center. This will be the last program held in the current Akron Elementary gym, as it will be demolished this summer.

Students in preschool, kindergarten and second and fourth grades at Mentone Elementary are also preparing for their annual spring music program. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 with the program beginning at 7:00 in the gym. The preschool will lead the program with a sing-a-long with Poppy, a troll from the movie Trolls.

Both music programs are open to the public. There is no charge to attend.
