Akron Elementary School students recently got the chance to tour the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department as part of Fire Prevention Week, a nationwide event held Oct. 8 – 14, 2017.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme was “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out.”

Kindergartners visited the fire station the morning of Oct. 12. Firefighters from the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department explained to them the importance of fire safety and ways to stay safe during a fire. They also explained the importance of meeting family members at a pre-planned meeting place in the yard, or some place nearby. Students were also taught how to stop, drop, and roll.

During the fire station tour, students were explained the purpose of each fire truck and were able to walk around and sit on top of the trucks. One firefighter also explained the gear the crew wears when they go out on emergency calls.

Afterwards, the firefighters loaded each student onto the trucks and gave them a ride back to school. The kids even got the chance to go down a slide as a way to get off the truck.

First, second, and third graders were taught the day before some of the same lessons as kindergartners. Thank you to the Henry Township Volunteer Fire Department for providing this experience to our kids!
