The Tippecanoe Valley High School student council and the American Red Cross will host a community blood drive on Friday, Dec. 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

The blood drive is open to anyone who meets the donor requirements outlined by the American Red Cross. Anyone interested in donating blood can go online to www.redcrossblood.org and register using the zip code 46910. You can also register by emailing Crystal Heckaman, student council sponsor, at [email protected].

The high school student council hosts several blood drives throughout the school year. The American Red Cross provides scholarship money to students depending on the number of blood donations collected during the blood drives.

According to the American Red Cross, a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Mentone 5th graders rake leaves for “Be a Good Neighbor Day”

This entry was posted in Mentone, News on by .

Fifth graders at Mentone Elementary School are taking a hands-on approach when it comes to giving back to their community.

Friday, Nov. 3rd, was the school’s second annual “Be a Good Neighbor Day.” It was started last year as a way for the school to increase community involvement. Nearly 80 students went to several homes throughout Mentone to help rake leaves for elderly residents, or for people who needed some extra assistance with household chores.

“As a principal of an elementary school, you want to provide kids with a lot of wholesome experiences as they go from kindergarten to fifth grade. This is one of those times that will be a good memory for them,” said Principal Randy Dahms.

The kids were split into several groups. Half of the groups went around to different homes on a bus provided by the corporation, while the other half worked at homes within walking distance around the school.

Dahms worked with fifth grade teachers last year to help organize the community service day. A simple project such as raking leaves is easy for elementary-aged kids to handle, he says.

“I’m hopeful we can expand this to more grade levels working on different service projects in the future,” said Dahms.

TVMS Spell Team advances to state finals

This entry was posted in News, TV Middle School on by .

A team of 11 students at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School will soon compete at the state level after placing first in their class at the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Junior Division regional qualifications.

TVMS and nine other schools throughout Indiana competed in the regional competition on Nov. 1, which was hosted by TVMS. Students were broken up into classes one, two, three and four. The class a team competes in is based on last year’s enrollment. TVMS competed in class three and scored a 50 out of the junior division’s perfect score of 72.

“TVMS had the overall top speller in three of the eight rounds. No TVMS speller scored lower than five of nine in any round. Two spellers scored eight of nine near-perfect scores,” said Principal Scott Backus.

The TVMS team will now compete against six other teams in the state competition at Purdue University. This will be the fourth trip to the state finals in the last five years for TVMS.

“We studied about 1,600 words and increased our practice time an extra hour after school to get ready for the regional competition. I’m so proud of this team for what they have accomplished so far,” said Susanne Siebrase, TVMS spell team coach.

The 33rd Annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl State Finals will be held Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Loeb Playhouse in the Stewart Center at Purdue University. The senior division competition begins at 11 a.m. and the junior division competition begins at 3 p.m.

Complete statewide results were posted Nov. 2 on the Indiana Association of School Principals’ website.

Here are the results from the regional competition on Nov. 1.

8 rounds of 9 words (72 possible points)

  1. TVMS                       50               (Class 3 #1)

  3. Northwood               33                (Class 2 #1)
